The California spiny lobster is found from Monterey Bay to Mexico, from the intertidal zone to 240 feet deep or more.

California spiny lobsters are nocturnal, feeding by night and hiding among rocks by day.

In the USA, commercial harvesting is done with rectangular traps, primarily along the southern California Coast and Channel Islands.

In Mexico, California spiny lobsters are harvested from Baja California and other areas.
