The University of Rhode Island (URI) Fisheries Center in conjunction with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Northeast Cooperative Research Program (NCRP) will host a two day workshop on July 12 and 13 at the URI Bay Campus, in Narragansett, RI.
The purpose of the workshop is to review the current state of knowledge involving fixed gear surveys, with specific discussion of existing programs and the design of future surveys using fish pots, long lines or hook and line methods.
The program will focus on the current designs of fixed gear studies in areas not readily surveyed by State and Federal trawl surveys, with a goal of using future surveys in stock assessments for various finfish species.
The first day of the workshop will review existing studies involving scup, halibut, southern rock fish, a west coast charter boat study, and a cod trapping project.
The second day will involve two breakout sessions where the participants will develop specific suggestions for fixed gear sampling programs in the Gulf of Maine/Southern NE and Mid-Atlantic waters and consider use of party/charter recreational anglers in hook and line survey techniques.
The results of the workshop will include a guidance manual for the development of fixed gear collaborative research surveys in the northeast region of NMFS. A complete agenda will be distributed prior to the workshop.
Location: URI Bay Campus, Corliss Auditorium in Narragansett, RI.
