The Department of Fisheries Oceanography (DFO) at The School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) has been working cooperatively with the New England fishing industry for more than a decade. Combining the knowledge and fishing expertise of fishermen with science enhances the ability to collect high quality data for use in sustainable fisheries management.
Cooperative research occurs throughout the DFO with the industry based annual sea scallop video survey, by-catch avoidance programs, fishing gear research and design, socio-economic investigations, and research on species such as cod, herring, yellowtail flounder, winter flounder, and monkfish.
On June 17th, a Dock-u-mentary event will highlight current cooperative research projects and celebrate the effort of industry and science to collect the best data possible to help ensure the future of northeast fisheries.
The program which takes place at 7:00 PM in the theater of the Corson Maritime Learning Center, located at 33 William Street in downtown New Bedford MA. The event is open to the public and presented free of charge.
