I am looking to switch fishery's.I would ideally like to make the acquaintance of someone in the industry with a intrest in training me in the offshore red crab/ lobster fishery.
I've been up & down the east coast, and yes I would be willing to give all that up...to fish out of ONE Port.
After my last boats "Rock Star's" drama; I told my loving wife maybe it's time to find a new fishery,new port...so unless someone out there can say,"Hay come to my dock work on my boat"then the wife & myself will be making are way to New Bedfprd Ma.
If your just seeing my post for the first time check my ad out it's been up for 8Mon's no ones even wrote me.

There was a small offshore lobster boat on craigslist RI. I emailed with him back & forth a bit & passed on your info. Perhaps if you did get on that boat it might be easier to live in RI. Either way its not a far commute back & forth from the boat if both you & the wife have cars etc.

Peter brought up a really important aspect of modern day American commercial fishing - the downtime. I think this is an issue that needs to be addressed in the industry.
The USA has an enormous wealth of skill and experience among its commercial fishing industry professionals. As a nation we seem to be wasting this incredibly valuable resource.
I wonder if other countries do a better job at putting fishermen to work during off periods???

Kevin;
Thank once again and good looking out...if this boat contacts me we'll let you know. I guess all I cando is wait for the phone to ring.
In the meantime I've been as proactive as I can for here on Hatteras Island...I called Atlantic there in New Bedford there hireing but I need to fax there fleet manager my info. I don't have a fax line, but I'll get on it tomm. I also plan on calling Shaftmasters I found one of there cards in a old bag...I told you that I had made a few trips for them back in the day, but more recent then that I trained a guy from Glouster Ma on the backdeck of a longliner, that worked for them...good dude funny as hell...Max. He told me if I ever needed a job or wanted to stop longlineing just call him...but we all know how that goes. It might as well have been a 100yrs ago on a different planit!!!
Standing By,
Pete
Ps: If anyone reads this and wants to give me a call feel free

I do have Todd Ellis's# from ShafMasters in Newington, NH. He is the fleet manager for their offshore lobster boats & 2 midwater pair trawlers for herring/mackerel. He is the one to talk to about finding a site unless you have a specific captain & boats contact info. Shafty is located in NH a few miles from the Maine border. Obviously you are open to anything but this option would have you commuting a good few hours to the boat if you lived in New Bedford. Most of the time it works in the reverse order where fishermen from Maine/NH commute to the boats in New Bedford but not always. I can put you in contact with captains & the fleet manager from Atlantic red crab as well; when you are ready but I would suggest waiting until you are settled in NB, I myself would want to know you were local before hiring you on to a boat. Some may hear NC or in the process of relocating to NB & be cautious & think there may be issues surrounding your off the boat activities & or housing situation etc. Remember NB is full of fishermen looking for work, obviously some are messed up on drugs, booze just out of jail for serious crimes etc so you want make a good impresion on those willing to give you a chance.
Good luck
