The Somalia Maritime Assistance Foundation (SMAF) is a new non-profit organization with a goal of providing solutions to the Somali piracy epidemic.  Founded by international workers’ rights’ advocates, the SMAF aims to provide Somalis an alternative way of life to piracy and the means to protect themselves.

The SMAF’s three-pronged approach includes:

1) building a maritime school to train legitimate mariners

2) reviving the badly and illegally depleted indigenous fishing industry

3) establishing a Somali national coast guard.
