What do the United Commercial Fisherman, Louisiana Shrimpers Association, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and 66,000 Americans have in common?
They’re banding together as part of BPMakesMeSick.com to tell President Obama to demand that BP allow oil spill clean-up workers to wear protective respirators while they work.
The New York Times reports that workers are breathing in toxic fumes day after day -- and other reports show that some workers have already landed in the hospital with nausea, chest pains, and headaches. Yet BP seems more worried about controlling what images the public sees than about the health of workers.
In response to the crisis, a coalition of local and national activists launched the BPMakesMeSick.com website. The group has gathered over 67,000 signatures including Commercial Fishermen of America President Jimmy Rule, United Commercial Fishermen President George Barisich and Louisiana Shrimping Association Interim President Clint Guidry.
Organizers commented, stating "We cannot let the denial of protective gear that hurt so many 9/11 clean-up workers happen again with the Gulf clean-up workers.
"We all want to see the Gulf cleaned up as soon as possible, so fishermen and people across the Gulf can get back to their jobs and support their families. But we have to protect clean-up workers from dangerous chemicals like toluene while they clean up BP’s mess.
"President Obama and the federal government must demand that BP allow every clean-up worker who wants to wear respiratory protective equipment to do so -- and ensure that workers get the equipment and training they need to do their jobs safely.
Obama says 'the federal government has been in charge' of the clean-up efforts. Now's his chance to prove it."
The new coalition is already driving big headlines. Tech President calls it "the first high-profile push we've seen to use political organizing tactics, online and offline, to shape the ongoing disaster in the Gulf."
