The Commercial Fishermen of America Reaffirms Commitment to Nation’s Fishermen in San Francisco

San Francisco, April 23-25- The Board of Directors of the Commercial Fishermen of America met under the spires of the Golden Gate Bridge last week at their west coast office to discuss their commitment to the future of the fishing industry and our country’s oceans, while solidifying plans to address the major issues facing the industry.  The Commercial Fishermen of America also took the time to finalize their plan for the opening of their new east coast office.

“With the direction that came out of this meeting, combined with the opening of our east coast office in Maryland, the Commercial Fishermen of America is poised to address the needs and issues facing the fishermen of the east, west and gulf coasts,” said Margaret Curole, Commercial Fishermen of America Board Member.

The east coast office will be located within the Maryland Watermen’s Association offices in Annapolis, Maryland, and will be the membership headquarters for the organization.  In addition to establishing the plans for the east coast expansion, the Commercial Fishermen of America identified key problems facing the fishing industry to focus on in the next few years as part of the strategic planning process. The foremost area that the Commercial Fishermen of America will focus on is increasing the public’s knowledge of the commercial fishing industry, its fishermen, the resource, fishing communities, and the natural commitment fishermen have to preserving and maintaining functional ocean ecosystems.

“Fishermen are the natural leaders in the fight to protect our oceans. No other industry has a greater stake in keeping our oceans healthy,” said Jimmy Ruhle, trawl fisherman and President of the Commercial Fishermen of America, “The Commercial Fishermen of America will be at the forefront of the battle to protect our oceans. We recognize that a healthy ocean environment is essential to support sustainable fishing and to provide America’s consumers healthy seafood”.

The Commercial Fishermen of America also vowed to continue their campaign to bring affordable health care to fishing families, and retain working waterfront access and infrastructure.  CFA will continue to help procure disaster relief funds for the Gulf of Mexico fishermen crippled by hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 and for west coast fishermen affected by the 2006 Klamath River disaster.
