EmailLos Angeles, California, April 1 Vessel management and electronic logbook software program, CatchLogV7 Pro, which is revolutionizing international fisheries, is finally available in North America.
CatchLog Trading Pty Ltd has customized its programs for several North American fisheries and will begin sea trials in May.
CatchLog, the first software of its kind "developed by fishermen for fishermen", intends to help overhaul the North American fishing industry, slow to adopt this new technology.
The Australian-produced program reduces the captain’s paper compliance workload, tracks catch size and location, searches historical catch data and easily calculates crew payments and expenses.
CatchLog and its innovative technologies has piqued the interest of fisheries management in the US, Canada, New Zealand, Europe and the Falkland Islands.
Since the middle of 2006 CatchLog has been working with US and Canadian fisheries to produce customized versions of the program.
The Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has confirmed their intention to work with CatchLog to target the bulk of their many thousands of vessels in order to introduce mandatory daily catch monitoring and effort reporting.
In Southern California, CatchLog is working on an automated program for the Western Fishboat Owner’s Association (WFOA) to facilitate real time catch reporting for their Albacore fleet.
CatchLog was officially demonstrated at the recent WFOA AGM in Astoria Oregon on March 28th.
To comply with North American regulations, CatchLog has incorporated features such as automated hailing procedure, handshake confirmation of information exchange, third party observer “unload” validation, and biometric security enforcement. They are close to compressing data files to a size where is can be sent via VMS, a huge breakthrough for this industry.
Logbooks are a major component used for assessment of fishery impacts on the marine environment. Electronic filing of mandatory logs ensures information is timely. Important decisions can be made using accurate data, an intrinsic element to NOAA’s 5 year strategic plan (United States Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).
Over seven years, Australian commercial fisherman, Dieter Bohm, a shrimp fisherman for 37 years struggling with increasing paper work and international buying agents demanding real time catch data for his native Gulf of Carpentaria fishery developed CatchLog V7 Pro, an easy-to-use vessel management and catch effort reporting system for the commercial fishing industry.
Arguably the industry leader. Constantly taking on board industry feedback, the original version has been reworked and refined it to create CatchLog V7 Pro, an up to date, comprehensive vessel management program that incorporates vessel and fleet management functionalities.
CatchLog V7 Pro can be customized to suit any fishery, anywhere in the world.
Mike Farrell, skipper of the FV Territory Leader in northern Australia, said CatchLog’s program represented the future of the global fishing industry.
"Our catch data is just so much more manageable using CatchLog," Farrell said. "I don’t have to wade through a mountain of paperwork and I get to see my data in real time so I know exactly what I am catching. I can view my catch history and [can] use that information to optimize my current fishing effort."
