Google Earth 5.0 was released on February 1, 2009. The online resource now allows users to virtually explore the planet’s oceans. The program seeks to increase public knowledge and appreciation for the world’s oceans. Sea surface temperature data, details on surf spots, wildlife tracking data, chlorophyll levels, and old Jacques Cousteau videos are among the plethora of information that Google Earth 5.0 will make available on the oceans.
The new updated version was created by Google who collaborated with scientists, environmental advocacy groups, and government agencies. The list of contributors includes the Cousteau Society, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the National Geographic Society, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the New England Aquarium, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and others.
