The venerable Fish Expo Atlantic (FEA) trade show has been renamed Commercial Marine Expo (CME) and is relocating from Providence, Rhode Island, to a waterfront facility in New Bedford, Massachusetts, according to show management. The 2010 event will be held June 9-10 at the State Pier in the heart of New Bedford’s working waterfront.
“We listened to the industry,” reports Ted Hugger, show director. “In 2008, we successfully broadened the scope of the show to embrace all commercial marine businesses—our new name more accurately reflects the direction our exhibitors and attendees want us to take the show.” Commercial fishing and fish processing will continue to play a major role in the show, as will tug and barge operations, fire, police and harbor security, military, ferry, freight, pilot and port operations.
“The industry also told us they wanted a connection to the waterfront, a less expensive venue, and the ability to display boats in-water,” Hugger explains. “This move brings us right down to the working waterfront with more than 50,000 square feet of indoor exhibit space, 20,000 square feet of outside display space on the pier apron, 1,000 linear feet of deep-water pier frontage for large boats and ships, plus floating docks for smaller craft.”
“Reduced facility and operational costs will allow us to double our attendee marketing campaign with a goal of 1.7 million impressions through trade magazines, local media, and targeted direct mail,” Hugger explains. “The combination of an exciting waterfront facility, embracing commercial fishing and commercial marine operators, and an unprecedented marketing campaign will double attendance over
the 2008 event.”
The new location and format will allow exhibitors the ability to demonstrate products and processes inside or outside, and to display and operate boats from the piers or floating docks. “The New Bedford State Pier is an ideal location that will allow us to reduce costs to exhibitors, provide a more vibrant event, and set the stage for growth as we expand the offerings of the show,” Hugger continues. “We’ve received unprecedented support from Mayor Scott Lang, the city, and the New Bedford Harbor Development Commission. HDC executive director Kristin Decas has worked tirelessly to bring the show to New Bedford—and the community as a whole has welcomed us with open arms.”
New Bedford is the number one fishing port in the U.S. in terms of value of catch, with more than 500 commercial vessels based there. In 2008, 65.5 million pounds of fish were landed with a value of $280 million. In addition, the port handled $70 million of commercial cargo, more than 91,000 ferry passengers, 16 ports-of-call for cruise ships, four barge operations, plus a host of harbor, port, and security operations supporting more than 200 local businesses and 4,900 jobs.
Commercial Marine Expo, incorporating Fish Expo Atlantic, is sponsored by National Fisherman magazine. For additional information on exhibiting at CME 2010, visit www.comarexpo.com.
