As Alaska celebrates its golden anniversary, the reasons many of us-sourdoughs, greenhorns and visitors alike-pulled up stakes and headed to Alaska come to mind. Some came for the clean air and water, abundant wildlife and fish, and untamed wilderness. Others came simply for the freedom to follow their own path. The pioneer spirit that helped make Alaska lives on in all of us.

To commemorate that spirit, Alaska Sea Grant offers the Statehood Edition of the 2009 Alaska Coastal Calendar. The calendar is the latest in an award-winning series produced by the marine research, education, and outreach program headquartered at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The calendar is packed with stunning color images of Alaska's coastal wildlife, breathtaking scenery, and hardy people. Informative narratives and historical facts about Alaska's statehood journey highlight Alaska's people, history, culture, and natural resources.
