The USDA Northeast Regional Aquaculture Center is offering a workshop for shellfish producers on Thursday, April 8, at the University of Southern Maine Glickman Library.

The all-day event will provide basic marketing information and techniques for cultured shellfish like oysters and mussels. While many aquaculture businesses in Maine have generally found receptive markets, opportunities exist to increase income while bolstering industry competitiveness in the face of escalating foreign production.

Skip Bennett, owner of Island Creek Oyster Company, will deliver the keynote presentation about how an innovative marketing plan and sound business philosophy helped him develop his company into a dominant New England oyster brand.

Other topics to be covered include cooperative business models; branding, certification, and eco-labeling; market identification and transportation pathways; and sales and customer relations. All shellfish producers are welcome: the program will be beneficial to both experienced and new operators as well as seafood industry professionals.

The Northeast Regional Aquaculture Center is hosting the workshop in collaboration with Maine Sea Grant, University of Maine Cooperative Extension, Maine Aquaculture Innovation Center, Maine Aquaculture Association, East Coast Shellfish Growers Association, Connecticut Sea Grant, and Salem State University.

Admission to the event is $20 and includes lunch. To register, please contact Kathy Villarreal at 207.581.1435, or by email at kvillarreal@maine.edu.
